How to Change the Default Save Behavior in Office 2013 and 2016

By default, when you save a new document in Office 2013 or 2016, you are taken to the Save As menu under the File tab, part of the “backstage” area of Office 2013 apps. From here you can save to a number of different places, depending on what you’ve connected to Office 2013, as well as access a lot of different menu options.

But what if you just want to be taken to the classic dialog box when you click the save icon or press ctrl + S? You don’t want to have to click through all the options presented in the default save process. In other words, you just want to see something that looks like this:

  1. From the File tab, click Options.
  2. Select the Save tab.
  3. Check the Don’t show the Backstage when opening or saving files box.
  4. Optionally, you can choose a default local file location and check the Save to Computer by default box. This will choose a default location for you when the dialog box appears.
