Easily tell how many unread messages are in your inbox without browsing to your Gmail tab by installing the ‘Unread Message Icon’ lab. This lab puts a small number on top of the envelope favicon (image in the tab of your browser) so you can see your unread count at any time.

1. In Gmail click on the gear icon and select ‘Settings.’
2. Navigate to the ‘Labs’ tab. Find and enable ‘Unread message icon.’
3. Save changes.
