3 Ways to Make Your Google Docs Look More Professional

We’ve all seen the differences between Google Docs that were clearly slapped together and those that look polished and professional. Here are three tips make sure your Docs fall into the second category.

1. Use a template

Why start from scratch if half the work has already been done for you? Take advantage of a template. Google has tons of options for different kinds of documents, like project proposals, newsletters, and lesson plans.

When you start a new Google Doc, click on Template Gallery from the main screen and browse through the selections. Alternatively, in any new Doc, you can go to File > New > From template.

2. Find and pair great new fonts

Sometimes people go a little overboard playing around with fonts, which can make your document look distracting and unprofessional. Keep it simple: no more than three fonts in a Doc, and find ones that work well together.

There are hundreds of fonts that are available in Docs. Head to https://fonts.google.com/ to take a look. If you see a font you like, you can hover over it and click See Specimen to see samples of the font in various styles, as well as popular fonts that go well together with it. This is a great way to quickly and easily see pairings that work well together.

To add any of these fonts to your document, click on the dropdown font menu in Docs > More fonts > type in the font name > OK.

3. Use a flowchart tool

Lucidchart is a great flowchart tool that lets you create slick, professional-looking flowcharts and diagrams.

In Docs, go to Add-ons > Get add-ons. Search for Lucidchart. Click on the +Free button to install it, and then grant it permission.

To start using it in Docs, go to Add-ons > Lucidchart Diagrams > Insert Diagram > Create.

Choose from pre-existing templates or start from scratch. You can easily drag and drop elements, type inside each element, change the colors, and connect them. When you’re done, click Insert in the right-hand menu, and instantly, you’ll have a professional looking flowchart in your Doc.
