How to Use Google Hangouts to Make a Pet Cam

2 minute read

Hangouts Yellow

As the new movie The Secret Life of Pets wonders, “Ever wonder what your pets do when you’re not home?”

Well, calling all pet lovers: Now you can find out. By using Google Hangouts, you can set up a pet cam to check in on your furry friend during the day and see what they’re up to. It’s fast, free, and simple.

  • Before you leave home, create a new event in Google Calendar. Make sure to click Add video call, and hit Save. You can create a separate email account for this (and send an invite to your regular email address), or just create it using your regular email address and find the event later on your Calendar.

  • You’ll need a laptop to leave in the room with your pet. Place it in a location where you’re happy with the camera view, angle, etc. and then join the Hangout before you leave home.
  • Once you arrive at your destination away from home, open up the meeting invite/event and click Join video call.

  • Now you’ll be connected to the Hangout. (Just a note: Hangouts seems to disconnect after about two hours, so it’s a good way to keep an eye on your pet for a little while.) You’ll finally be able to see what your pet is doing while you’re not at home. Who knows—you might even be surprised by what you see!
