A new Gmail inbox for desktop and mobile was announced today (5/29), and it’s putting a lot of emphasis on automatically tagging emails for you. This allows you to sort your inbox by what is most important to you, be it social, promotions, updates, etc.

If you’re currently a user of Labels, the new inbox will automate part of the process for you, similar to the Smart Labels Lab.

The Smart Labels Lab “automatically categorizes incoming Bulk, Notification or Forum messages. Filters are created to label mail with these categories and Bulk is filtered out of the Inbox by default. Use Settings -> Filters to modify these defaults or create new filters. Report mis-categorized email from the ‘Reply’ dropdown menu.”

Gmail for desktop and mobile will give you the flexibility to choose from the five pre-set tabs, along with your ‘Primary’ tab, and place them in any order you wish.

So when will you have access to the new inbox? The Gmail team had this to say:

“The new inbox is rolling out gradually. The desktop, Android and iOS versions will become available within the next few weeks. If you’d like to try out the new inbox on Desktop sooner, keep an eye on the gear menu and select Configure inbox when it appears in the Settings options.”

*Update* – Now available for iOS

The new Gmail inbox is now available for iOS, and you can download it here. What do you think about the new look? Tell us on Google+
