How to Post to the SharePoint Newsfeed

Posting to the newsfeed on your team’s (or organization’s) SharePoint site is as simple as typing your message and clicking Post.

You can include a lot more in a newsfeed post than just text, though it’s not immediately obvious how. The video above provides a walk-through of each of the examples below.

To add a URL or link to your newsfeed post:

  1. Copy the URL you want to post to your clipboard.
  2. With the cursor in the newsfeed posting field where you want your link to appear, paste in the copied address. It will appear in the text of the message, and a window will pop open that provides an option to replace the display text.
  3. Add the display text you want to the Display as field — the “friendly” name for the link — and click the check mark.
  4. Click Post to post your complete message.

To include a link to a SharePoint document in your newsfeed post:

  1. Copy the URL for the document to your clipboard. (To get the document’s URL, click the ellipses next its listing in its library, and you will see the URL in the callout.)
  2. With the cursor in the newsfeed posting field where you want your link to appear, paste in the copied address. It will appear in the text of the message, and a window will pop open that provides an option to replace the display text.
  3. Add the display text you want to the Display as field to replace the URL and click the check mark.
  4. Click Post to post your complete message.

To mention someone else in your newsfeed post:

  1. With the cursor in the newsfeed posting field where you want the mention to appear, type the @ character and begin typing the name of the person you want to mention. You’ll first see a list of the people you’re following, and as you type more letters, you’ll see names that match your entry.
  2. When you see the name of the person you want to mention, click on their name to add it to the post.
  3. Click Post to post your complete message.

Note: when you include a mention in your post, the person (or people) you mention will receive an email notification, if they’ve enabled them. If they follow you, they’ll get an update in their newsfeed, but if they don’t follow you, a number is appended to the mentions link in their newsfeed to indicate that you mentioned them.

To include tags in your post:

  1. With the cursor in the newsfeed posting field where you want the mention to appear, type the # character and begin typing the tag you want to use. If tags are already in use, you’ll see suggestions based on the letters you type. You can click on a suggested tag, or finish typing it yourself.
  2. Click Post to post your complete message.

To include a picture in your post:

  1. Click in the text box where you want to include a picture (.jpg, .png, or .bmp) and then click the camera icon.
  2. Click the Browse button that appears in the Choose a picture dialog box and browse to your desired image.
  3. After you’ve selected your picture, click Upload.
  4. Click Post to post your complete message.

To embed a video in your newsfeed post:

  1. Copy the URL of the video (from a service like YouTube) to your clipboard.
  2. With the cursor in the newsfeed posting field where you want your video to appear, paste in the copied address. A window will appear that shows the thumbnail of the video and the option to change the URL of the video to display text.
  3. Add the display text you want to the Display as field to replace the URL and click the check mark.
  4. Click Post to post your complete message.
