Although aliases and nicknames can be fun, Slack is a professional tool and it is important to keep a standard policy for user names. If not for the professionalism, it is also helpful to always know who it is you are messaging.

Since there is no one-size-fits-all naming convention, Slack makes it easy to create a set of rules that will be shown to all new users letting them know your company’s policy when it comes to username.

1. Click the crop down menu next to your Slack team name
2. Select “Team Settings”
3. Navigate to the “Settings” tab
4. Click into “Username Guidelines”
5. Write your username policy in the “Custom Guidelines” box
6. Click “Save Settings”
