You probably know the keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste, but here are a few little-known shortcuts for Microsoft Word and Excel (on Windows) that you may not have known before. These handy tips will speed up your workflow.

Insert a link into a Word/Excel document

  • Head to the website you want to link to and copy the URL.
  • Head back to Word, highlight the text you want to transform into a link, and hit Ctrl + K.

  • Instantly, it brings up the link dialogue box and you can paste in the URL you just copied.

Open recent files in Word/Excel

Do you ever close a document, only to immediately realize you need to open it again? To do this quickly and efficiently, here’s a shortcut:

  • Hit Alt + F + O + 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 to open the file you’re looking for

Create tables without using the table menu in Word

If you’re in need of just a small, basic table, you can insert one into your Word document without ever having to touch your mouse:

  • Hit the + key, followed by the Tab key. Repeat this as many times as you want. Each space in between the plus signs will represent a cell.

  • When you’re finished, hit Enter, and Word will insert your table.
